Be French, play some music & be subversive!

To my great shame, I did not notice that the excellent Etre et Avoir was on the telly last night (on BBC2, to be precise) - what a shame, as this is quite an interesting documentary on a rural primary school in France... Anyway, you can if you want catch it on video or DVD... (I do have a copy, but it's got no subtitles, I'm afraid!! - so only for the most daring!)

Apart from that, this week, this Tuesday more specifically, the French Institute will be celebrating the Fête de la Musique - quite an impressive extravaganza of various styles of music and songs, from France and beyond...
The whole programme of festivities is described here... I am really happy that other outlets, such as Cabaret Voltaire, are taking part! Hopefully this whole concept will catch up!! I know I will certainly try and check it out!!!

However, if your heart leans more towards Cinema, you may catch up with the excellent & subversive Journal d'une Femme de Chambre (tonight Monday & tomorrow night), as part of their Luis Buñuel Season. Adapted in 1964 from a novel by Octave Mirbeau, this film presents the ruthless ambition of chambermaid Célestine (Jeanne Moreau) through manipulation. Sex is power... Information is power... Just a brilliant film really!!!
Should you however miss it for whatever reason, you can still catch up with another offering from Buñuel : the amazing Belle de Jour.

Belle de Jour

Starring Catherine Deneuve, as icy & beautiful Belle, a housewife who fills up her afternoons by working in a high class brothel (or does she? - that is one of the questions!), Buñuel's vision oscillates between reality and fantasy to depict masochism, exhibitionism & voyeurism with une élégance certaine. If after all this, you decided not to go, what can I say?
It would be your loss!!
Anyway, both films are on at the Filmhouse: check it out!
